ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process of developing measures for shared understanding. This work was performed with the goal of helping the Swedish Armed Forces get a better assessment tool for lower-level tactical team shared understanding. This is based on six different data collections. The focus of first study was on capturing how members within a team could adapt to each other. The purpose of the second study was to investigate how mutual understanding between team members affected team performance. The third study aims to develop measures for shared situational awareness that were correlated to performance and were easy to understand and use. The fourth study was to test the method: ranking predefined important items for the team to succeed. These item lists were developed using tank battle and tank command and control subject matter experts (SMEs). Fifth study compares two conditions: same battle management system vs. mixed method condition. Sixth study also compares the participants in trained and non-trained teams.
