ABSTRACT

Dietmar Eberle criticizes the current trend within the competition business to approach complex building tasks by defining a large number of detailed spatial specifications. On the contrary, Eberle suggests turning around this process of formalization by arguing for procedures that courageously work against the idea that the winning entry should be the one that responds best to the spatial specifications requested. The role of the competition – according to Eberle – should be understood as a way to develop an effective and durable client-architect relationship while engaging with a given design problem. Baumschlager Eberle, which has offices in Lustenau, Vaduz, Vienna, St. Gallen, Zurich, Hong Kong, Berlin, Hanoi, Paris and Hamburg, is a highly successful participant in architectural competitions. Eberle has procured a number of projects by taking part in architectural competitions. This chapter presents an interview session with Eberle taken by Ignaz Strebel (IS) and Jan Silberberger (JS).
