ABSTRACT

Alliances and mergers among airlines are common. Will they become so for airports as well? Some, such as Doganis, believe so. Doganis (1999, 2001) has forecast that there will be a few, large airport groups in the next decade or so. In this chapter we examine factors which might induce airports to enter alliances or form groups of multiple airports under one owner. We also examine some of the policy problems which could arise should these alliances or groups develop. Several possibilities are present, but two broad types of arrangements are likely to be of most relevance:

strategic alliances between separately owned airports;

groups of airports under common ownership.
