ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the recent history of Dublin Airport, Ireland, and chronicles the Irish government's evolving policy in relation to the development of additional terminal facilities at the airport. McLay and Reynolds-Feighan (2006) reviewed the development of Dublin Airport up until 2005, when the possibility of competing terminals at the airport was an alternative that the government was considering. McLay and Reynolds-Feighan (2006) set out the economic and regulatory issues surrounding such an innovative policy initiative, along with the background to such a policy stance being considered. Ireland's airports are recognised as having major significance for regional and national economic development. The network of airports facilitates access to Ireland's regions and, accordingly, the structure of the Irish airport industry is of interest from a regional economic perspective.
