ABSTRACT

Northwest Ohio is one of North America’s leading regions for the production of greenhouse crops 1 (Reid and Carroll 2005, Figure 14.1). In recent years, however, northwest Ohio’s greenhouse industry has faced intense competitive pressure from greenhouses located just north of the U.S.-Canadian border in southern Ontario. Further exacerbating the competitive pressures facing the industry is the fact that the northwest Ohio region has some of the highest energy costs in North America (LaFary et al. 2006; Reid and Carroll 2006). These two factors are creating a very uncertain economic future for an increasingly vulnerable industry.
