ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of Gen-Y collaborative consumption practices in tourism by introducing three main examples of connected consumption initiatives: Airbnb, Couchsurfing, and Wwoofing to explore the significance of these three modes of collaborative consumption, focusing on the dimensions: engagement, sharing, expertise and efficacy. It presents the existing literature on collaborative consumption and addresses the particularities of Gen-Y consumers living within a digital context and using technology and specifically the internet within their collaborative consumption experiences. The chapter focuses on collaborative consumption research by integrating Gen-Y practices and discusses the dark side of the sharing economy. This provides a useful guide to understanding Gen-Y collaborative consumption particularities and offers insights for tourism and marketing researchers as well as the tourism industry. Gen-Y youth are generally considered as team-oriented with a focus on their feelings within their workplace and life experiences.
