Re-introducing density in shrinking cities: lessons from Japanese cities

Most Japanese cities face unprecedented challenges of population decline and ageing. The population decline with continued urban expansion resulted in reduced population density in cities and threatened the levels of public services such as public transport. Ageing in cities calls for mobility options alternative to private vehicles and more walkable urban environment.
