ABSTRACT
Transportation is no small contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs). In 2010, passenger and freight vehicles were responsible for 23 percent of global GHGs emitted.1 Of the 7 gigatons of carbon dioxide released worldwide due to transport in 2010, 72 percent was attributable to road transport. Non-roadbased carbon dioxide emissions, such as rail, shipping, and aviation, accounted for under 30 percent of transport-related carbon dioxide emissions.2 In the future, the implementation of driverless cars and electric vehicles, as well as a system transformation towards a shared transportation economy, should go a long way to reducing future transport-related GHG emissions.
