ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on second home tourism in Sicily and aims to provide a systematic overview of the development of second home tourism in this area. The study reflects on the conceptual definitions and estimates of statistically unreported activity related to second home usage, discusses the unregulated marketplace related to the rental of second homes for tourism purposes, and points out the lack of studies related to the behavioural choices of second home owners, non-paying guests and renters. Emerging trends and suggestions for future research on second home tourism in Sicily are also outlined.
