ABSTRACT

Mastering screenwriting craft is not just about writing. It is about learning structure, decoding character arcs and internal/external journeys in whatever are screenwriter's preferred format, and figuring out how to raise stakes, create effective escalation, keep their protagonist active, and so much more. One path to developing their craft with ongoing, constructive feedback and insight is the MFA programs at higher learning institutions across the country. While each program operates in its own unique way, many offer mentoring from experienced Hollywood screenwriters, while providing a demanding incubator environment to help the writer develop craft on a rigorous, demanding schedule. Becoming a working screenwriter requires producing exceptional screenplays or outstanding original television pilots, or both. Or even more bluntly: the industry is on the lookout for screenwriting professionals, or in the very least writers with the talent, dedication and discipline to become that.
