ABSTRACT

The history of modern art was often described as history of the struggle for an autonomous image purified of everything narrative, illustrative. The art exhibitions contain extensive written documentations, sound tracks, lengthy videos and films telling different kinds of stories. These can be personal stories of some real or fictional protagonists. Or they can be descriptions of certain historical events, past artistic performances or interventions, political engagements, participatory projects and so on. The individual spaces of a novel's heroes remain separate but at the same time the novel creates a common space in which the particular heroes' spaces can intersect – and the heroes can interact. The novel can be read and re-read – even if the interpretation of a novel is subjected to the historical change – its textual body remains self-identical through time.
