ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews what is known about the psychological well-being of people who live in urban areas as compared with those who reside in rural settings. It will also examine patterns of mental health among immigrants who leave their home country and typically move to a more affluent nation, especially the United States or one of the Western European countries, to flee persecution or obtain jobs and

greater economic opportunities. We begin by examining how the characteristics of rural living compare to features of urban life with respect to mental health.
