ABSTRACT

The exercise described in this chapter provides a systemic and an individual framework for better understanding of privilege and power in society and the role that they play in each clinician’s life. The exercise also encourages an examination of the link between the inner and outer operations of power. The primary aim of this exercise is to help clinicians become more aware of how power has worked in their own lives and to increase their ability to imagine how social forces may have affected others. It draws attention to one’s experiences of both privilege and oppression, and posits that we all experience both in our lives.
