ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a range of activities for teaching and assessing communicative speaking skills in the classroom. The activities are organized into five categories, each reflecting a specific goal of instruction aimed at developing spoken communication: Developing clarity in spoken communication, developing communicative and conversational ease (sociopragmatic skills), developing dialogic reasoning skills and negotiating points of view (pragmalinguistic skills/lexical and grammatical complexity), developing fluency, and developing formal speaking skills.
