ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces instructional activities and assessment options that teachers can adapt for classrooms with reading-development goals. The activities and assessment options included represent extensions of what is known about skilled reading (Chapter 2) and effective reading curricula (Chapter 3). The first part of the chapter focuses on teaching techniques for improving students’ reading abilities, including vocabulary development, main idea comprehension, discourse structure awareness, strategic reading, reading fluency, and reading motivation. The second part of the chapter explores techniques for integrating reading and writing; the third part focuses on assessment of and for learning in the context of reading instruction.
