ABSTRACT

The use of 3D visualisation technology is becoming a part of everyday life, from film and computer-game effects to kitchen design. This chapter looks at a number of different ways that 3D technology can be used to conceptualise and design museum and gallery entrances and thresholds. It offers an additional lens to add to the range of new methods in order to provide alternative ways of reflecting upon the museum threshold experience. The chapter looks at the elements which make up a 3D immersive environment, how the user experience of the 3D space can be structured, and how the user experience can be evaluated in order to inform real-world decisions. Key to the chapter is the way that the use of 3D tools can help to create environments in which ordinary users – be they staff or visitors – can immediately connect with a space, and understand it in a similar way to how they relate to the physical space.
