ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the potentials of adopting the Green Building Information Modeling double paradigm through the process of sustainable retrofitting of heritage buildings. To start setting the scene of heritage buildings in Egypt, a number of laws and legislations that arrange the classification of built heritage in Egypt should be highlighted. The case of built heritage within the context of Egypt is quite unique in a number of ways. The chapter discusses the factors affecting this uniqueness, including values embedded in them, the applied conservation strategies on these buildings, in addition to detecting legislative issues organizing their classification. The National Organization of Urban Harmony generated a different classification of the values embedded in heritage buildings, where historical, architectural, symbolic, urban, social and functional values are discussed in their guide. Despite the great value of Egyptian built heritage, applying conservation strategies on them is faced with many problems and threats.
