ABSTRACT

Building performance, including energy efficiency and the tools by which to diagnose pathologies such as the causes of overheating, has become a priority for building design and construction. This chapter focuses on the drivers for and challenges identified in the exemplar Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM)-based refurbishment of Manchester Town Hall. The case study focused on the inter-organisational aspects of Building Information Modelling (BIM), such as communication, collaboration, and data sharing between the project stakeholders during the design and construction planning. The Manchester Town Hall Complex transformation programme is one of the earliest high-profile uses of BIM digital modelling software on a set of heritage buildings in the UK. From the design point of view, BIM digital modelling software helped tremendously in terms of visualisation to support decision making, and the automated model update was really easy and straightforward, leading to significant time and cost efficiency.
