Social versus natural sciences I will begin this chapter by going to two points in Flyvbjerg’s consideration of the difference between the social and natural sciences (2001: 47) – points 1 and 4. Point 1 is:
There is no reason to think that we could end up in social sciences with the kind of knowledge that is attainable in the natural sciences. This theoretical knowledge of the natural sciences is abstract and context independent. It allows us to formulate generalized laws, which can be applied to create accurate predictions.
