ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the trends in the distribution of higher education employees. It reviews the recommended strategies for selecting and developing faculty and staff. All institutional employees are classified by full- or part-time status, faculty status, and occupational category. In any staffing practices model, recruitment and selection, orientation, supervision, performance evaluation, professional development, turnover, and retirement must be considered. The chapter then explores the approaches for improving performance and ideas for accommodating the short- and long-term budget reductions necessary to enhance productivity and efficiency in today's postsecondary education environment. It focuses on an overarching recommendation to engage in purposeful, mission-driven, data-informed human resources planning and decision-making that takes into consideration the complex employment relationships found in colleges and universities. Specific advice focused at the institutional level and at individuals responsible for managing human resources is intended to provide guidance on how to create and maintain highly effective organizations composed of highly effective employees.
