ABSTRACT

“The Troubles” refers to the bloody conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland starting in the 1960s and continuing to the “Good Friday” accord in 1998, which, by and large, has maintained peace and security. Three of my top-rated feature films take place during this time. In addition to Hunger, there is also Bloody Sunday (FF-28) and Omagh (FF-29). For many readers, what is portrayed in these films might all seem like ancient history—and in some respects is ancient history. But what these films also show is how people can be taught to hate others on the basis of a single difference between them, in this case religion, and the horrible things they are capable of doing because of this.
