ABSTRACT
Much in the manner of the Jim Crow laws that governed race relations in the American South for decades, apartheid was the official position of the South African government from 1948 until 1994, which coincided with Nelson Mandela's election as the country's president. As its name indicates, apartheid was based on the separation of races, but in truth the elevation of whites and the oppression of blacks and those considered to be “coloreds.”
