ABSTRACT

For many Westerners the human rights issue they most associate with Africa is female genital mutilation—in a continent where there are massive violations of economic, social, and cultural rights but also civil and political rights. Because of this widespread assumption, I initially hesitated to include Moolaadé on this list, but this film treats the subject of FGM in an intelligent manner, and the film also does a nice job of challenging the viewer's expectations in other ways.
