ABSTRACT

In the spring of 2012, one of the most talked-about videos on the Internet was “Kony 2012.” The Kony in the title is Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda, and this half-hour video, which went viral nearly the moment it was released, was produced by Jason Russell, who had put out Invisible Children six years earlier. Certainly, many more people have viewed “Kony 2012” than have ever watched the earlier film, although the popularity of “Kony” might well spark additional interest. The plea in “Kony 2012” is that by the end of the calendar year Joseph Kony will be arrested and turned over to the International Criminal Court and be brought to trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes. Those interested can even order a “Kony kit” with information on the warlord's activities and two bracelets to show off support for the initiative.
