ABSTRACT

Educational and psychological tests can be an important source of information in educational assessment if the tests are constructed well and the use of the test scores is supported by validity evidence. This chapter focuses on nonverbal tests and the type of information that they yield for use when assessing children for placement in gifted and talented education programs. Identifying children who are gifted—that is, those for whom placement in a gifted and talented education program is most appropriate—depends on the use of tests that yield reliable and valid scores. The chapter discusses the extant evidence related to using nonverbal instruments in identifying giftedness. It highlights some articles that are very useful for individuals who want to familiarize themselves with the major nonverbal instruments that can be used for identification. The chapter concludes with comments on using nonverbal tests for identifying ethnic and racial minority students specifically for gifted placement.
