ABSTRACT

In 2012, approximately 1.77 million or 3.4" of children in the United States attended homeschooling. The inherent appeal of homeschooling for many families, combined with the coordinated efforts and political savvy of its primary advocacy organization, which helped to legalize homeschooling across the United States by 1989, has contributed to this unparalleled growth. The appeal of homeschooling for parents of gifted learners is likely the opportunity it provides to offer an education tailored to meet the unique learning and affective needs their children exhibit. For those parents who identified underachievement as a factor influencing their decision to homeschool a gifted child, motivational issues and power struggles continued to occur, especially during the time these families were transitioning to homeschooling. Homeschooling is an activity that impacts the entire family. Depending on the needs of the individual children in a family, one, some, or all of the children might be homeschooled.
