ABSTRACT
A quarter of a century ago your Editor, in his role as Director of Masters/Diploma programmes was fortunate enough to work with a team from Sheffield University’s Department of Education as they redesigned their continued professional development masters and advanced diploma course so that they could be offered overseas in what was then termed distance mode. The driver for this initiative was the imminent collapse of the generous funding regime which up until then had allowed serving teachers the opportunity to have up to one year’s study leave with tuition fees and one’s full salary covered by the local education authority.
