ABSTRACT

This chapter includes photographic work made in the realms of mapping and location; in engagements with online search engines; in critiques of widespread systems of surveillance and image gathering from the public realm; in decoding and disrupting newly articulated codes of social and interpersonal exchange. When thinking about methods for making images in a contemporary world, people must take a long look back into the history of photography as a medium but also as a way of expressing thought and meaning to a viewer as a way of communication. By creating a simple letter and asking the stranger to stand in their window at a specific time, Shizuka Yokomizo was able to create an environment that didn't require any further communication between herself and the subject. The Shizuka's work was conceived after failed attempts to run around London with a telephoto lens, trying to capture unsuspecting people through the windows of their apartments.
