ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates dynamic process for institutional change in an industrial cluster and analyzes the framing processes among institutional entrepreneurs for the regeneration of an industrial cluster. It reviews early studies on new institutionalism for organizational theory and discusses theoretical 'aporia'. The chapter uses a useful explanatory logic concept for social movement theory in order to deal with institutional theoretical 'aporia'. It explains both the research method and data collection for investigation of the research object and presents the case analysis of the Arita porcelain production area. The case analysis demonstrates how institutional entrepreneurs found contradictions in the extant institution and conducted institutional works for an institutional change such as legitimatizing a new institution in the production area. The chapter focuses on the framing processes in which institutional entrepreneurs attempt to achieve their purposes through institutional change while projecting or following frames. It explores theoretical implications about the explanatory logic of institutional change based on findings from the case analysis.
