What was “sound” in antiquity? The introduction to Sound and the Ancient Senses samples some ancient soundscapes and reviews the surprisingly rich and complex ancient lexicon for sound itself. Reviewing recent work on sound both in and beyond classics, the editors frame the volume’s contributions and highlight both the difficulties and the benefits of exploring the sonorous texture of ancient life.
