ABSTRACT

Bill Fishman left a valued legacy, especially on the history of the Jewish East End, which provides the central if not the only focus of these memorial essays. But it needs to be remembered that his work transcended religious boundaries. He remained curious about all aspects of life in that quarter of the capital, from the schwer und bitter to the joyous and celebratory. And as a giver, not a taker, he was always encouraging of others. As a result, numerous professional scholars and amateur investigators have been continually inspired by his books, journal articles, walks and lectures to undertake their own forays into the East End. In that sense his legacy lives on.
