ABSTRACT

This chapter presents how industry incentives promote sustainability and resilience within the context of ecosystem management. It establishes a better understanding of the motivations for resource-based industry to participate in ecosystem management projects. The chapter outlines the importance of multiparty collaboration in ecosystem approaches to management and the increasing significance of industry as a key stakeholder in the management process. It specifies the framework of ten factors that may stimulate industry to engage in transboundary ecosystem management efforts. An ecosystem approach to management is holistic in addressing natural resource issues by focusing on the interaction between human communities and entire ecological systems. The leaders of Burney-Hat Creek Community forest and Watershed Collaborative Group partnership consisted of Sierra Pacific Industries, Pacific Gas and Electric, Fruit Growers Supply Co., and W. M. Beaty. The Burney-Gardens Timber Harvest Plan (THP) demonstrates the value of forming solid relationships with neighboring stakeholders to both attain natural resource management goals and realize financial gain.
