ABSTRACT

Each chapter in this edited volume has addressed a particular aspect of the charter school puzzle. For this Afterword, I was invited to comment on charter school issues from the perspective of an education school dean. Having served in that role for 18 years, until 2013, I readily apply that perspective to educational issues. Undoubtedly, my career-long experiences as a special educator and my four-year term on a state board of education influence my views as well. I will consider charter school issues as they intersect with the core teaching and research mission of universities and explain why schools of education have reason to be concerned about—and engaged in—the charter school movement.
