ABSTRACT

Dr. Joseph Baldwin, in an article titled, "Notes on an Afrocentric Theory of Black Personality", wrote about the European cosmology. In European cosmology the so-called human-nature relations are separated, compartmentalized, and independent. One could say that a basic emphasis in the European reality structure is toward "exclusiveness". The basic theme characterizing European cosmology is that of "man versus man or nature", of conflict and antagonism, with the emphasis being on man's mastery and control over other humans or nature through domination, oppression, suppression and unnatural alteration. Jencks and Riesman's assumption is inconsistent with HBCUs' history of educating a cadre of scholars in law, literature, and political science. Professors at HBCUs encourage students to be competitive, focused, and prepared to compete with scholars from other postsecondary institutions. Throughout doctoral program the author worked full-time at Morehouse College and part-time at Clark Atlanta University, where taught English composition, world literature, reading comprehension, African American literature, and the aesthetic of films.
