ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the student viewpoint of an accelerated online cohort PhD program at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the southern region of the United States. For this chapter, the author shares her personal perspective and includes cohort members' narratives. After receiving both bachelor's and master's degree from predominantly White institutions (PWIs), attending an HBCU for doctoral work was one of her goals. During her doctoral research, she decided that an HBCU would add value to her academic career because of the rich tradition and the opportunity to study with minority colleagues. It seemed as if cohort members did not want to communicate about their process in the dissertation phase. The comprehensive exam at Hampton University was an online ten-page paper they had one week to complete. Hampton University armored her with the leadership and management skills necessary to work in higher education administration.
