ABSTRACT

The process of collecting a do-it-yourself (DIY) corpus for teachers’ use in the classroom is extensively discussed in this chapter, highlighting the need for time and effort to construct a pedagogically sound corpus. A principled collection must include consideration of a few very important factors, not only related to the texts and their linguistic properties but also to specific contexts, approvals and consents, and related ethical concerns. Tips on how to design and compile written and spoken texts from learners, professionals, and other specific registers or contexts are provided.
