ABSTRACT

Our highest priority early on in the CMS Task Force project was to catalyze a new conversation about change in music studies that could fill the needs of educated musicians in the 21st century. This conversation was expected to lay groundwork for subsequent action steps by which a vision of a reformed, revitalized undergraduate program could be realized locally on university campuses of various sizes, shapes, and missions. Long after its release in Autumn 2014, the sheer volume of attention the Manifesto continues to receive, including the enthusiastic embrace of colleagues across many music specializations to dialogue together and convert ideas to action, suggests that the first phase of this work has been a resounding success. Yet we believe significant work remains to be done in terms of fathoming the proposed vision in its fullest dimensions.
