ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Sociability and CosmopolitanismScience, Religion and Sociability in Early Eighteenth-Century Irish. Andrew Kahn agrees, claiming: Many more examples of such interaction are needed in order for the study of Russia's experience of the Enlightenment to be more fully understood. he will examine how Shcherbatov specifically adopts the language associated with the Scottish Enlightenment. What follows is a brief biography of Shcherbatov and a discussion of the most important terms used in On the Corruption of Morals in Russia as regards doux commerce. He will also examine the three possible mechanisms of modern prudence that Shcherbatov provides: the noble family, the Orthodox religion and the person of the ruler. Shcherbatov says of Peter the Great: Here we can see clearly two tiers of magnificence; an appropriate 'certain' magnificence, proper for the realm; and an inappropriate excessive magnificence, leading to corruption.
