ABSTRACT

While China had been in news for its assertiveness in the neighbourhood for contesting sovereignty and territorial issues with East, South East and South Asian countries, internal security challenges for the country are also mounting in the recent period. Indeed many a Chinese Communist leader is concerned about the internal security situation right from the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, given the intense political legitimacy issue with the nationalist Kuomintang, with the recent period of reform further signifying the issue. Indeed, for the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP), internal stability and security issues have been of paramount concern recently, with economic growth rates coinciding with rising protests in the country.1
