ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a feminist theory and uses intersectional analysis to frame the findings from an empirical, mixed methods study on the help-seeking behaviours of ethnic minority and immigrant victims of domestic violence in Hong Kong. It develops a framework to document the typology of victims of domestic violence is an indispensable first step in plugging the justice gap. The data presented in the chapter derives from questionnaires and interviews conducted with EMI victims and frontline service providers working with this community in Hong Kong. The Domestic Violence Ordinance was extensively amended into its present form of the Domestic Violence and Cohabitation Relationships Violence Ordinance Cap. Feminist discourse has highlighted the masculinities institutionalised through various cultural structures, including the law. Additionally, in Chinese society and many ethnic minority communities, solidarity of family, including that of the extended family, is very important, creating an expectation of an obedient, respectful and deferential wife.
