ABSTRACT

Sandtray Play in Education draws on the methods of Jungian Sandplay Therapy, using the tray of sand and miniature figures. Sandtray play and storytelling honors the necessity of play in child development and learning, which is a well-known fact among professionals working with children. In sandtray play in Education, children access their inner world and connect with the unconscious, but not as deeply as in sandplay therapy. As a witness, the practitioner or counselor sets the atmosphere by affirming the child's freedom to create, by being respectful and non-judgmental of the child's work, and by accepting it with an open heart and mind. In Sandtray Play, it is the trained and certified practitioner who witnesses the child's play. The sandtray play practitioner must use his or her imagination in building a collection.
