ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of visual methods in learning and teaching. This is achieved first by examining appropriate learning and teaching models and providing examples of how such methods can be incorporated into the curriculum. The chapter considers how the most rewarding and fruitful environment can be created, along with points for consideration when implementing visual methods. Despite a growing interest in visual methods within social science research, consideration must be given to how this can be translated into meaningful classroom activities. After having typically been taught a number of qualitative approaches and techniques, students would benefit greatly from the incorporation of visual methods into the curriculum. When introducing visual methods into curricula, a key consideration must be how this work should be assessed. Owing to the great deal of emphasis placed on assessment by students, how such assessments are designed, implemented and marked is worthy of deliberation.
