ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on tobacco, which is used on college campuses, including some typically unknown facts about tobacco, some common myths and misperceptions, things that are changing within the world of tobacco usage and what both individuals and campuses can do to promote a tobacco-free generation. Due to the efforts of many targeted anti-smoking advertisement campaigns, the long-term effects of cigarette smoking and tobacco use in general have in recent years become common knowledge. Knowledge about the prevalence of lung cancer and heart disease, the most prominent of the group, among users have led to reductions in people beginning to smoke and has inspired some to quit. The tactics and strategies of the tobacco industry to find new customers by targeting the young adult market became better understood and can be utilized to help educators address tobacco use on campus.
