ABSTRACT

Given the historical, linguistic and geographical diversity of the Caribbean, especially the insular Caribbean, any endeavour to analyse the status and prospects of the internationalization of its higher education system is not a straightforward undertaking. This chapter highlights some of the characteristics of the internationalization strategies of regional higher education institutions (HEIs) as well as public policy responses. It focuses on the strategy of the University of the West Indies (UWI), an institution serving 17 territories, to illustrate how one HEI is making maximum use of its multinational reach to take advantage of the opportunities provided by internationalization in order to serve its constituents more effectively.
