ABSTRACT

As educators and as members of society, we are facing a dramatic sea change in the way we learn, communicate, teach, and live in the world. The digital revolution has yielded technologies that were hardly imagined even a decade ago. Because such technologies are now inexpensive and accessible to people of any socioeconomic status, they are nearly ubiquitous in workplaces, homes, and even our pockets. As a result, classrooms preparing children for the world of tomorrow feel pressured to introduce screen media earlier and earlier in children’s education. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm that society and administrators may feel about integrating screen media into early childhood education is not always supported by theory or by the experiences of the educators who must implement it.
