ABSTRACT

Katie’s mother was surprised when her five-year-old refused her usual morning bowl of Fruity Pebbles. Katie explained, “Yesterday we learned in school that just because something has fruit in the name doesn’t mean it really has fruit in it. And guess what? Fruity Pebbles doesn’t have any fruit in it, and it’s got a lot of sugar just like candy. I want Cheerios instead.” Her mother happily complied. Then, a few weeks later, Katie requested Fruity Pebbles again. Her mother responded, “I thought you didn’t want Fruity Pebbles anymore because it doesn’t really have fruit in it?” to which Katie replied, “I shouldn’t have told you about that!” But then she asked for the Cheerios.
