ABSTRACT

This chapter includes two case studies and a collection of stories that spotlight lessons learned and promising directions from an innovative transmedia approach to technology-mediated family engagement and learning using public media. The case studies have been drawn from the evaluations and impact studies of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) 5-year U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) Ready to Learn (RTL) initiative. RTL has funded public television stations to develop new educational programs and learning tools that provide children with the fundamental skills needed for school readiness and school success in the twenty-first century. The transmedia approach explored strategies for connecting learning at home with learning in school and in early childhood programs-equipping and empowering parents as teachers and learners with their children.
