ABSTRACT

The power of a “nudge” to influence behavior is shown to be effective in many areas of social development, such as civic engagement, education, and health care. A nudge-a brief suggestion or reminder of a positive behavior-is a small step that is typically inexpensive and a non-intrusive means of promoting behavioral changes. Nudges include actions that might subconsciously change behavior, such as displaying healthy food options more prominently than less healthy options in a convenience store or school cafeteria, as well as more overt actions, such as text messages recommending a book to read with one’s child. In education, nudges have been used in several ways, including increasing college attendance and encouraging parental involvement in children’s early learning.
