ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to analyse the response of Basque society to the terrorist phenomenon by two means. First, we measure the attitudes of Basque public opinion towards ETA and its activists and other issues related to terrorism, such as the sense of fear of getting involved in politics or the feeling that there is no freedom to talk about politics. In the second place, we have developed an original database about the social response to the deadly attacks by ETA and other terrorist organisations. We have recorded whether protest demonstrations took place or were not held. By doing so, at the same time we gain a panoramic view on the variables, such as the chronological context, the status of the victim or the responsible organisation on the crime scene.
