ABSTRACT

Between Orientalism and Persomania: the Presentation of the Iranian Collections at the Louvre (Marianne Cotty)

The Iranian antiquities brought to the Louvre Museum during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century by French explorers, including Marcel Dieulafoy, Jacques de Morgan and Roland de Mecquenem constituted a large expansion for the collection of the Oriental Antiquities Department. The discoveries they made at Susa excited scholars and dazzled audiences. The museographic approach presented here allows the assessment of the intellectual reception and impact of Elam on Western audiences in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
